2026 High School Seniors & Current College Students
Congratulations on your continuing studies to further your education. We, at Sun Prairie United Methodist Church (SPUMC), would like to help you with this worthwhile endeavor. Sun Prairie UMC is blessed with many generous members who care about students and their education and have offered scholarships to people furthering their education. We have over 18 scholarships available each year.
To receive a scholarship applicants must…
- Be an active participant in the programs of SPUMC, attend worship regularly and have volunteered at SPUMC since confirmation.
- Lead a Christian life
- Participate in high school/college community clubs/organizations.
- Plan to attend 4-year college/university, tech/vocational school or short-term career training course.
- Have a willingness to participate in the life of a campus church/ministry and when returning home for breaks attend worship at SPUMC.
How do I apply for a SPUMC scholarship?
- Complete our Online Application. See Button Below.
- Email a recent photo of yourself to Director of Family Ministry Daniel Taylor for use online and in print publications.
- Supply two (2) Recommendation Forms using the online Recommendation Form See Button Below to two adults by April 1, 2025:
- a member of this church;
- a family friend, a teacher, college professor or someone you have worked with.
Please check to make sure your letters of recommendation have been submitted by the due date, as we will not process incomplete or late applications!

Application Due Date-All applications and letters (2) of recommendation must be submitted by April 15, 2026.
Presentation of Scholarships…
- Scholarships will be given out Sunday, May 17, 2026.
- You will be notified in advance and will be expected to be in worship to receive your scholarship.
- A thank-you note written to the scholarship sponsor is expected.
If you are not in worship to receive your scholarship and do not communicate a valid reason to us in advance, the scholarship will be VOID.
Available SPUMC Scholarships
2026 Graduating High School Seniors
Sun Prairie United Methodist Church Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship has been funded by local gifts and memorials. A recipient of this scholarship may use it for attendance at any institutuion of higher learning, including vocational/technical schools, private or state colleges and universities. It is not limited to Wisconsin Institutions. Students who are active members of our church and are graduating High School Seniors may apply.
Thompson Family Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship will be given to a graduating high school senior who is an active member of SPUMC and will be attending a Wisconsin school of higher education. They must display an active participation in community and high school activities.
Elsie Czehno, Penny DeMott Daughters Scholarship
Elise Czehno established this scholarship in honor of her five daughters in 2006. Penny DeMott added monies to memorialize her daughter.
Preference is given to a SPUMC high school graduate who plans to attend a college or university to study elementary education or a medical related field. Eligibility is open to both graduating high school seniors and those who are just entering their first year of post high school education.
Frank N. Brown Scholarship
This scholarship was establised in 2005 by Frank Brown. Prefence is given to a graduating high school senior entering the field of education, and an active member of Sun Prairie UMC.
The Carolan Family Scholarship
Dorthy Carolan, Nancy Carolan Lendborg, and Sandy Carolan have established this scholarship to honor preferabley a SPUMC member. Preference will be given to someone who would like to take classes at an accredited college or university, community college or short term training course. Prefence will be given to active participants in the programs of SPUMC, lead a Christian life, participate in ANY high school and/or community clubs and/or organizations, have a financial need AND display many of Jim's personal attributes, yet have been passed over for scholarships.
Continuing education students
The Rev. Stan Strosahl Family Graduate and Seminary Scholarship
Rev. Stan and Phyllis Strosahl, longtime members of our church established the Strosahl Graduate studies scholarship to help seminary students and college students in pursuing serminary and/or graduate degrees.
Dr. Joseph Syty Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Joseph Syty, a longtime family physician in Sun Prairie, by his family. The scholarship has been designated to attracte a member of the church who would like to further their education in a non-traditional way (those returning to school after a break in their education). Prefernce will be given to these students, but if there are no non-traditional students applying it will be given to a member seeking to further their education in any field.
The Tom and Carol Fisher Scholarship
Tom and Carol Fisher established this scholarship for the preference of the benefit of SPUMC members who are continuing education students attending one of the UW system schools. It is the preference to assit those already attending UW schools or as a transfer to the UW system. These students may either be enrolled in an education related or business related field. It is the preference that they be active participants in the programs of SPUMC, lead a Christian life, participate in high school/community programs at SPUMC and at their respective university schools.
The Mission Encouraging Scholarship
Applicant is to be furthering their education at an accredited college, university, technical/vocational or short term career training course. This scholarship should be awarded to a continuing education student who has completed mission work. Prefernce will be given to someone who has been involved in mission work through our church or through some other non-profit organization for the betterment of this earth. The scholarship is funded by the Tummy-Yummy business.
Seniors and continuing Education Students May Also Apply
Waymire Memorial Scholarship
The Waymire Memorial Scholarship establised in 2000, is given to a member of the church who is seeking to further their education, both vocational or four-year. Students may reapply for a total of four years. An applicant must demonstrate Christian activities in both the community and church.
Alden Britton Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the Alden Britton Trust instituted in 1998. SPUMC members may apply for this scholarship. It may be used for attendance at any college or university in undergraduate or graduate programs. This scholarship may be granted to an individual only one time.
Doug and Claudia Ayers Scholarship
A scholarship has been established by Doug and Claudia Ayers for use by applicants who have been memebers for 1 year and are in good standing with the Sun Prairie United Methodist Church. The scholarship assist members who would like to take classes at a community college, technical school or short term career training course. The scholarship was given in the spring of 2010.
Whitney Paige Carlson Scholarship
Whitney Paige Carlson passed away in July 2007, the summer before her senior year of high school. Whitney was an active person, who loved life. She loved animals and children. Whitney was involved in several mission projects/trips and United Methodist Camps in her short life. Whitney wanted people to connect with each other. Her developing faith in God added depth to her life.
Preference for this scholarship will be give to one who wants to pursue a degree in higher education and who fits Whitney Paige Carlson as described above. Preference will be given to those who are pursuing a higher education degree to make a difference in the lives of children or in the field of veterinary science. Preference will be given to someone attending any institution of higher learning including private or state colleges and universities in Wisconsin or North Dakota. Preference will be given to members of SPUMC.
The Dorothy Phillips Memorial Scholarship
Dorothy Phillips was a true church lady for the Sun Prairie United Methodist Church and this scholarship has been created to honor her activities at the church. She began the annual garage sale, spent many hours cooking in the kitchen for various events and was a loving, caring person to all who walked through the doors of the church.
Preference will be given to a member of SPUMC who wants to continue an education at a technical school, college, or university to preferably study horticulture emphasis or culinary arts, but is not necessary if no one fits the criteria. Applicants must be in good standing and have spent volunteers hours to further the purposes of the church.
Carrie Gray Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was created in memory of Carrie Gray by her loving family to assist members of SPUMC who are furthering their education at an accredited college, university, community college, or technical school.
First preference will be given to students who did not attend Sun Prairie East or West High School and second preference will be given to an applicant who is pursuing their education out of state.
If no applicant is pursuing their education out of state, preference will then be given to the applicant who exemplifies Carrie's character (i.e. had a disability and endured physical challenges, was an avid sports fan who participated in the way God intended according to her abilities, was an avid reader and was a generouse friend). This scholarship can be award to the same person more than once.
