“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
There are all sorts of word games and word puzzles we can do alone or with others. Some of those are online like, Words with Friends or the ‘old fashion’ way like crossword puzzles and Scrabble. Recently, I started doing a daily word puzzle online called 7 Little Words. The puzzles can be beginner level to advanced and are based on a ‘hint’ and the number of letters in the word. For instance, the hint, “Eve ate from this tree” and it has nine letters. The word would be ‘Knowledge.’
We all know how important words are…words can show care and compassion and words can do great harm. The gospel writer of John introduces the divine nature of Jesus by saying, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
On a bike ride recently, I was riding through a newer subdivision in Sun Prairie called Providence. Then I noticed that in the Providence neighborhood are streets with names like Celebration Dr. and Harmony Ln. There is also an intersection of Hope St. and Triumph Dr.
It was peaceful just to ride through this neighborhood and read the names of the streets. It is amazing what a word can do or the feelings a word can bring to mind or stir up in us. For a moment, I imagined living on the corner of Hope and Triumph!
During Epiphany this past January, many of us from church received Star words. The idea behind the Star Word is to have a word that we can focus on for the year and that can guide us. Sometimes simply recalling our word can bring us back to centering ourself in God’s presence.
I invite us to think about the words we speak to others and how words can lead and guide us and settle deep within us as a centering point in our life and faith.
