Small Group Ministry
Each Advent Season we offer a number of study groups to help us grow spiritually. Please check back later in the year to learn more about these opportunities in 2021.
The title of the class is “The Holy Land Revealed,” one of the many classes offered on the Great Courses website. Each week, we’ll begin the class with a half hour video lecture, followed by a time for us to discuss what we learned. The video lectures we’ll be watching are given by Dr. Jodi Magness, a distinguished archaeologist and a professor at the University of North Carolina. Over the course of 36 weeks, Dr. Magness will take us through archeological finds in Holy Lands that help shed light on what we find in the Bible.
The class will held Wednesdays beginning on Oct 7th at 10:00 am and last about an hour or so. If there are some weeks that someone isn’t able to join the class, it’s not a problem. Attendance is never taken, and each lecture is a standalone class.
Please contact Brad Mather for more information.
Books Between Bites is an informal group that gets together once a month to listen to a book review while enjoying lunch together.
Currently due to Covid-19 this group is not meeting. We will post information about the group when we are able to meet again safely.
For those new to Sun Prairie UMC and for those who might now be interested in joining, Grace Café is offered as an opportunity for women to gather for book study, companionship, and support. There are two groups, one meeting on Thursday evenings and another meeting on Friday mornings. Generally, participants choose the group that most aligns with their schedule, but you will find like-hearted, wise, and kind women in both groups.
Since the onset of COVID-19 the Friday gathering has been meeting virtually by ZOOM and now the Thursday Night Grace Café is back, also meeting virtually by ZOOM.
Thursday Night Group
Our Thursday night women’s book study will be restarting virtually in February. We will meet on Zoom from 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm Thursdays, February 11 – March 25. Sarah Smith will be facilitating again, with our first call on February 11 will be an optional kick off call to connect with each other before our book study officially begins on February 18.
Friday Morning Group
Our Friday morning women’s book study is currently discussing the Gospel of Mary Magdala by Karen King, PhD and this study will continue through February 12. Beginning on February 19-March 26 we will begin a Lenten study.
In the case of each Grace Café, a book is still being chosen, but will be Lenten-focused.
All women are welcome to join us! Please contact Juanona Brewster at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information or to register.
Knit Crochet Pray is a group who meets on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month. Pre-COVID, we would meet at the Wesley House next to the church, but have transitioned over to Zoom since the start of the pandemic. We craft prayer shawls, pocket prayer shawls, baby blankets for baptisms, and hats. The hats we donate to the Sun Prairie Schools every Fall.
We have many years of experience in our group and are always willing to share if you are interested in learning how to knit and/or crochet. Or maybe you would like to brush up on your skills? The second Monday is designed for just such sharing of our knowledge. On the fourth Monday we include devotional readings and prayers as we continue to work on our various projects. New members are always welcome and thanks to many generous donations over the years, we have plenty of supplies such as yarn, needles, hooks, and patterns to get you started!
If you would like more information, please contact Kathy Wessel at email@example.com.

We will follow the Conference-wide Lenten study written by our Bishop Hee-Soo Jung. The study is titled, Together in Christ: A Lenten Study on Beloved Community. The Council of Bishops of The United Methodist Church has committed to a priority of Dismantling Racism, Bishop Jung’s study is a resource on radical inclusion and racial justice. This will be an important study as we explore together issues that are challenging and often uncomfortable. Each weekly session offers a Scripture passage, a reflection, a set of questions for group conversation, and suggested assignments for the days in between sessions. Please join us for this important Lenten study. There will be no cost for materials.
The Men’s Group is meeting virtually on Zoom due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Pre-Covid 19 we met in-person on Saturday mornings at the church. We will most likely return to meeting in-person when we can safely do so. We start at 8AM, and end at 9 AM. The group is self-sufficient in that there is no official facilitator or leader. There are currently nine active participants in the group.
Typically, we start with a check-in on how our week has gone (everything shared is confidential). We try to keep the check-in to approximately 2 minutes per individual. Next, we discuss the current topic/book that we are using for our study. At times we use the Upper Room devotional as a fill in between topics/books. As an example we recently did a study on an Adam Hamilton book during the season of Advent. We share what was meaningful to each of us during our discussion. We have read several faith-based books over the years including the bible through a structured study. Approximately 50 minutes into the hour we take prayer requests/concerns/joys from our participants. We end with a closing prayer.
We also have some fun activities outside of the structured study. Pre-Covid 19 we did an annual “Brewers” game including tailgating. We are sure to continue “fun activities” when we can safely do so.
Please contact the church office for more information and to get the zoom link. We’d love to have you join us!
The M and M’s (Mary and Marthas) are one of the small groups at SPUMC, that are still meeting virtually. We are warm, friendly and love having newcomers join. We’ll begin a new book study in early February, and extend a warm invitation to all women at church to join in our upcoming study of “The Liturgy of the Ordinary”. This book by Pastor Trish Harrison Warren, earned Christian book awards and is familiar to the ladies of Grace Cafe.
If you are looking for a new opportunity to grow spiritually, or are feeling soul weary with common life these days, join us! Pastor Trish Harrison Warren relates how we might find God in the spaces of our ordinary daily routines, as we follow her through one of her typical days.
We will meet online once monthly, on these dates: February 11, March 11,
April 8, May 13. Meeting time is 6:15-8:00 in the evening. Book cost is $8.99 and is available at Amazon.
For more information or to sign up, please contact Laura in the church office, firstname.lastname@example.org
SPUMC Annual Women’s Retreat
Due to Covid-19 we will not be hosting our annual Women’s Retreat. We hope to be able to offer this again next year.
Each year, the women from our congregation journey to Pine Lake United Methodist Camp for a wonderful weekend of rest, revitalization and spiritual growth. Need to slow down, savor a warm beverage while chatting with friends, and enjoy time with God?
