God has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

A recent phrase that I have seen on cards, bumper stickers and social media says, “In a world where you can be anything…Be kind.”

The prophet Micah reminds us of what God requires of us, including being kind. And when we can put kindness into action along with doing justice and walking humbly with God, we will truly be living the most important message taught by Jesus—to love God with our whole being and love our neighbor as we love ourselves.

At our Confirmation class retreat this past weekend, we spent time going to prayer stations throughout the church. One of those stations was painting kindness rocks. The instruction was to paint an inspirational word or message on a rock. Then at the end of the retreat, the students took one of the kindness rocks to either keep themselves, share with someone or leave in a spot where someone will find it and be inspired. We painted the rocks with the prayerful understanding that just one word or message at just the right moment can change someone’s day or outlook on life.

If there were ever a day when we needed to do justice, love kindness and walk one step at a time humbly with God, this is certainly that day and time. In this week, may we find ways to be kind.
