SENIOR HIGH 2010 MISSION TRIP
Nashville, Tennessee
July 31 - August 7, 2010
IT'S ALL ABOUT SERVICE!!
The Mission Trip this year will be to Nashville, TN. This is a fantastic opportunity for the partners in the United Methodist Churches and our local church. For the first time Youthworks is offering a mission trip to Nashville, TN and they have partnered with the Division on Ministries with Young People (DMYP). This is a great chance for our youth to join others for a week of serving, growing in faith and connecting with fellow United Methodist youth and youth workers; to connect with the larger Church body.
Situated on the banks of the Cumberland River, Nashville opens up to the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. Nashville was named for Revolutionary War hero Francis Nash a few years after being founded on Christmas Eve 1779. Nashville became the capital city of Tennessee and quickly built itself into a very prosperous community. However the rumblings of secession were strong in the area and soon the Civil War was well underway. Despite the physical and financial destruction that befell Nashville in the war, the city bounced back quickly. In fact, much of the old architecture still seen in Nashville today was built during the post Civil War era prosperity in the area. The Grand Ole Opry, Country Music Hall of Fame and Ryman Auditorium are all well-known Nashville landmarks. Despite the ongoing overall success of this community, many Nashville residents and neighborhoods struggle. There are currently 19 low-income housing projects throughout Nashville and over 20% of families with children under 18 live in poverty. Eight Nashville area high schools have been called “dropout factories” with graduation rates of 60% or less. Let’s work together to make a difference!
