  The LOGOS Program

LOGOS is a Wednesday evening youth ministry of Christian nurture for children and youth. It is an international program offered in churches around the world. The LOGOS program at the Sun Prairie United Methodist Church is a fun-filled program where children meet with others for fellowship and learn about the Christian faith. Dozens of volunteer and professional staff adult leaders from our church gather each week to play, teach, nurture, and care for the children who come to LOGOS. LOGOS celebrates nurturing relationships through the model of Jesus Christ.

"LOGOS"

In our Jewish and Christian heritage there is no word quite like "LOGOS." The term has been used to describe "WORD"…the way God has been shown to us specifically as JESUS CHRIST. It also means "only one of its kind." We are each made individually in the image of God!

Who can be involved with LOGOS?

Anyone! Children, youth, and adults can participate in LOGOS on Wednesday evenings. You do not need to be a member of our church to be a part of LOGOS.

LOGOS is for children and youth in grades 1-12. However, there are many ministry positions available for adults who would like to be a part of LOGOS.

One of the requirements of LOGOS is that a parent needs to volunteer in some capacity. Various opportunities exist with differing time requirements, ranging from helping in the kitchen to teaching Bible Study, helping with Recreation, Worship Skills, being a Table Parent and many more. The parental involvement reinforces to the youth that LOGOS is important – and it also allows the parents a chance to experience the fun and fellowship as well as to grow in their own faith.

Needed:  LOGOS volunteers who love GOD and love youth! We have over 150 dedicated Adult Volunteers to be able to provide LOGOS at SPUMC. We need volunteers in many areas. Some positions are weekly, others are monthly. Contact Deb at 837-5554 ext. 107 and find out where you would best be able to fit in!

* With the church's Safe Sanctuaries Policy, all volunteers working with infants, children or youth are required to have a background check, fill out a volunteer application form and attend a Safe Sanctuaries training.

The LOGOS Registration Deadline is September 20th
If you had children in LOGOS last year:

  • You may register and attend the Parent Meeting at the Christian Education Picnic on Sunday, August 30th at Wetmore Park across from the church. Come after church, lunch at 11:30. Bring a salad or dessert. See other LOGOS families you may not have seen over the summer!  This is the best opportunity for you to learn about LOGOS for each age group (your children are growing!) and some changes we have made this year. We will also have information on all opportunities at SPUMC for children and youth in grades 1-12 this fall.
  • You may also register online.  Print up the registration form and mail it or drop it off at the church with payment  by the September 20th deadline.  You will then need to pick up a parent handbook.

If you have NOT had children in the LOGOS program before, a parent meeting is mandatory:

  • There will be a Parent Meeting at the Christian Education Picnic on Sunday, August 30th and you may register then. Come after church, lunch at 11:30 at Wetmore Park, across from the church parking lot. Bring a salad or dessert. This is the best opportunity for you to learn about LOGOS as well as all Chrisian Education Opportunitities open to children and youth in grades 1-12 this fall at SPUMC.
  • If you can not make the Christian Education Picnic, we will have another LOGOS Parent Meeting for parents new to LOGOS on Wednesday, September 9th at 6:30 p.m. at church.
  • If you are not able to make it to either of the parent meetings, please call 837-5554 ext. 107 or email  rdmulhern@charter.net so we can set up a time for an individual parent meeting.

For more information, please contact:  Deb Mulhern, LOGOS Director, (608) 837-5554 ext. 107

 LOGOS Staff Training
Minimize

Sunday, September 27th - LOGOS Staff Training at 4:00 p.m.

This event will help you learn more about the LOGOS program as a whole, as well as your part in the program this year. We will discuss the practical aspects of LOGOS, from discipline & teaching strategies, to where to find the first aid kits and other items that may be needed during the evening. We will also break out into groups with your coordinator to give you a better understanding of your ministry in LOGOS.

We will be including a light supper during the training. Call 837-5554 ext. 107 so we know how many to plan for and indicate if childcare is needed. Please bring a sack supper for any children who will be in the nursery.

Note: We will start out at 3:00 with a Safe Sanctuaries training for all volunteers working with children at the Sun Prairie United Methodist Church who are due to be trained. You will receive a letter if you need to be trained and/or if you are due for a background check.

The "Four Parts" of LOGOS

Each week the youth participate in four parts of the LOGOS program. Below is a brief description of each:

Bible Study
This part of the program helps students learn about Christ's love through discussion, regular work assignments, and outside relationships with others. The Bible is studied with the help of competent, dedicated teachers who seek to spiritually challenge all participants.

Worship Skills
Worship is central to the Christian faith. Teaching children about the love of Christ is incomplete without providing opportunities to participate in worship. LOGOS members will participate in worship periodically.

Recreation
One of the key elements of LOGOS is FUN!! Recreation time is an opportunity to let off steam in a safe environment, free from name calling, cheating, or hurtful words to one another. A variety of non-competitive games and activities are selected so everyone can have a good experience.

Family Time
Dinner! Each week the children share in a family-style meal. It is an opportunity for the youth to share important events in their lives with their adult table parents. A nutritious meal is planned each week by our wonderful kitchen staff.

LOGOS Senior High Colorado Conference - July 10 - 18, 2010

We would like to invite all current 8th - 12th graders to attend the Senior High LOGOS Youth Conference next summer.  Back by popular demand, we will again be attending the West Conference in Estes Park, Colorado. Located high in the majestic Rocky Mountains, Conference West offers breathtaking scenery, snow-topped mountains, lakes, meadows and opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, swimming, rafting and many other activities and sports, as well as fun, food, friends and fellowship, while strengthening your relationship with Christ. The dates will be July 10-18, 2010. The cost will be determined this fall and will be sent to each of the elegible youth at SPUMC this fall. If you would like to receive information about the LOGOS Colorado Youth Conference, call 837-5554 ext. 107 to get on a mailing list.   We are again offering the chance to be able to reduce the cost by doing the fundraising. Last year, we had about ¼ of the participants do a lot of the fundraising and brought their costs down to nothing.  The deadline for registering for Conference will also be announced this fall and will be included in the mailing you will receive.  At this meeting we will go over expectations for the trips and also explain the fundraising process. Youth going on the trip, along with their parents, will be required to be at this meeting.

Both youth and adults who have participated in the past couldn’t say enough wonderful things about this conference, so we are excited to be able to take a group again this year!  This week together truly changes lives. We believe that all who attend – youth and adults – will be enriched in some way. It might come through the excellent Bible studies or fabulous music learned. It might happen in new relationships developed. It might take place during the powerful closing worship service. When you feel Christ near you, life becomes more meaningful. The conference provides a solid 4 part LOGOS program every day with emphasis on building relationships with youth, adults and Jesus Christ.

This is a week of encountering Christ, making new friends, enjoying God’s love, being accepted and encouraged and coming away changed forever.  There will be plenty of opportunities for our church group to spend time together, however, there will be time during the conference when you will be encouraged to spend time getting to know those from other LOGOS programs all across the United States. All youth will be rooming with 3 youth from another church and an adult room leader.

Watch your mail and this website for more information, as it becomes available this fall! Any questions, see Deb Mulhern or Jennifer Niemiec.
